Flying and gliding is one of the many activities
of the air cadets. We get to go to civilian and military airfields across
the country and fly in their aircraft. There are two main aircraft the
cadets fly in today - the powered single engine Grob Tutor (Illustrated
Below) and the self take-off powered Vigilant glider.
You can fly the Vigilant and the Tutor when
you are 14 and have a first class qualification. We also have the privilege
to go up in other aircraft such as helicopters and high speed jets, though
we do not actually fly them. We usually get these flights when we are on
annual summer camps. It has also been known for cadets to be transported
from one place to another in Chinook helicopters and VC10 tanker
aircraft.
Once you have had several AEF Flights,
passed your GCSE's and are over 16 you can apply for a gliding scholarship
where you will receive one to one training and will be allowed to fly
solo. After completing your Gliding Wings you can then be recommended for
Powered flying Wings and will be given the opportunity to fly a powered
aircraft solo
